How Often Should You Antifoul Your Boat?

How Often Should You Antifoul Your Boat?

In the modern world, maintenance is really the bread and butter of keeping any product functioning at peak levels for as long as possible. Boats are no different. In some cases, boats require a lot more care and maintenance than other everyday products. An essential part of boat maintenance is antifouling. Antifouling is essential to maintain the quality of your hull and prevent weeds and barnacles forming on it. Antifouling will ensure that these growths don’t occur on your boat, and it will also make sure your boat’s speed, appearance and performance are up to scratch. But, the question remains: how often should you actually antifoul your boat?

Consequences of Not Antifouling Your Boat

Before we answer that question, let’s take a look at what effect weeds and barnacles will have on your non-antifouled hull after certain periods of time.

  • After 2 weeks in the water: a brown slime will grow on your hull, slightly reducing performance.
  • After 6 weeks in the water: Weed and barnacle growth will start appearing, slightly increasing your fuel cost.
  • After 12 weeks in the water: There will be long strands of weeds on your hull and the barnacles will be well established. Mussels will start growing as well.
  • After 24 weeks in the water: Severe fouling will occur and maneuvering will become difficult even at slow speeds.

Application and Re-application

Like most questions related to boats, there is no straight answer because the question is pretty subjective. It’s subjective since each boat is different, and each boat is exposed to a different number of unique conditions depending on its location and how it is treated. However, as a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to antifoul your boat once every year. The reapplication is vital.
